Latest update:

I live near the new Mall of The Netherlands in Leidschendam and love shopping. So I visited the Mall of The Netherlands to see if it has become as beautiful as promised.

In this review, I will share my honest opinion to help you decide if the Westfield Mall of The Netherlands lives up to its reputation and is worth visiting.

The Westfield Mall of the Netherlands in Leidschendam is worth visiting. The Mall of The Netherlands has become a luxurious “day out” rather than a straightforward shopping mall. The Mall of The Netherlands is a unique combination of shopping, eating, gaming, bowling, and cinema.

Read below what to expect at The Mall of The Netherlands. It is a unique concept I have never seen before in The Netherlands.

Review Of The Mall Of The Netherlands?

The Mall of the Netherlands has become a chic and luxurious shopping center. It was built on the former Leidschenhage shopping center site in Leidschendam, where I often came, and the metamorphosis is enormous. Apparently, it was a jaw-dropping investment of € 630 million, but the result is magnificent.

The Mall of The Netherlands is entirely indoors and incredibly large (117,000 m2). The Mall of The Netherlands is by far the biggest indoor shopping mall in The Netherlands, about three times as big as Hoog Catharijne in Utrecht.

The Mall of The Netherlands has two hundred eighty stores, restaurants, bars, and supermarkets. The presence of a cinema, bowling alley, and a vast Gamestate game hall makes it complete.

The Mall of the Netherlands has become more than a straightforward shopping mall. The Mall of The Netherlands’ idea is to have a “day out” instead of doing your shopping as rapidly as possible. The Mall of The Netherlands is so big you can easily spend a day in it.

The Mall of the Netherlands expects 40,000 visitors daily in the first year after opening. The ambition is to receive 100,000 visitors daily in the Mall of The Netherlands, which might happen.

The range of stores in the Mall of The Netherlands is vast, and there is something for everyone. Fortunately, you still have cheaper stores, like a Xenos and a Hema store. In addition, two of the best Dutch supermarkets, the Jumbo and the Albert Hein, have opened giant hypermarkets where I can still shop in a lovely environment.

The Food Court has become very attractive with various specialty shops with snacks and drinks. The Food Court is not cheap, but it looks beautiful, and the variety is enormous. The terraces of Leidschenhage at the pond are still available for days with nice weather. Those terraces will become very popular during summertime.

There are enough shops for men and children with stuff that interests them. There are stores with electric cars, a giant Lego store, a laser hall, and an arcade game hall. That is, of course, great fun for the kids, and you might even be able to persuade your teenagers to come along.

The large cinema is also fantastic and very convenient for locals like me. We no longer have to travel to downtown The Hague for a movie. Instead, we can visit this large cinema in The Mall of The Netherlands.

If you live in The Hague, you can also check out how the Mall of The Netherlands works out for you because it can easily be reached by public transportation.

Where Is The Mall Of The Netherlands?

The Mall of The Netherlands is located in Leidschendam on the former Leidschenhage shopping center site.

The Mall of The Netherlands is located next to the N14, the connecting road between Leidschendam and Scheveningen. Instruct your satellite navigation to drive to Leidschendam (city) and Weigelia (street).

The Weigelia is the street at the backside of the Mall of The Netherlands, where most free parking spots are.

Combining a morning at the beach in Scheveningen with an afternoon of shopping in The Westfield Mall in Leidscheven is ideal. Scheveningen Beach is one of the most attractive beaches in The Netherlands.

The Mall of The Netherlands is also relatively close to the beautiful center of The Hague.

With 40,000 visitors per day and 4,000 parking spots,
You have to be prepared for parking problems

How To Get To The Mall Of The Netherlands?

One significant advantage of the Mall of The Netherlands is free parking. That makes a huge difference compared to downtown The Hague, where you will spend a small fortune if you want to park your car there for an afternoon.

However, a warning is in order here. I work near the Mall of The Netherlands and often pass it on my bike. I already see serious traffic jams with cars trying to get to and from the Mall of The Netherlands.

I think the parking and congestion problems around the Mall of The Netherlands will only worsen as its popularity increases. If they get up to 100,000 visitors daily, parking and traffic jams at the Mall of The Netherlands will be a big problem because only 4,000 free parking spots are available.

How To Avoid Parking Problems At The Mall Of The Netherlands?

There are about 4,000 free parking spots near the Mall of The Netherlands, but that will not be enough on busy days.

Consider if public transportation might be a good option for you. Public transportation is excellent in The Netherlands and a perfect way to avoid parking problems and traffic jams around the Mall of the Netherlands.

Three HTM tram lines run along the Mall of The Netherlands, with stops close to the mall. These are the HTM tram lines 2. 6, and 19.

  • Tram line 2  goes directly to the Randstadrail station of Voorburg ‘t Loo (5 minutes), which means you can also use the Randstadrail.
  • Tram line 6 goes directly to the NS station, The Hague Mariahoeve (5 minutes), allowing you to come by train.
  • Tram 19 comes from Delft and goes via Leidschenveen to The Mall of The Netherlands. You can park for free in the residential area of Leidschenveen and hop on line 19 (10 minutes). This avoids all the parking and traffic jams at the Mall of The Netherlands and seems convenient.

Hotels Near The Mall Of The Netherlands

I hear more and more that people book a hotel near The Mall Of The Netherlands to start shopping first thing in the morning.

That is a clever idea because in this way you avoid all the traffic jams and parking problems. The Mall of The Netherlands opens at 10:00 a.m. At that time, you can still park without problems and shop relatively quietly for the first few hours of the day.

If you are only coming for the shopping, the Fletcher Hotel Leidschendam-Den Haag next to The Mall of The Netherlands is a good choice. You can park in front of the hotel without any problems, and it is a 20-meter walk to the mall entrance. Another very nice hotel close to The Mall of The Netherlands is Central Park Voorburg, a hotel with excellent reviews from its guests.

If you want to combine shopping with a day or weekend at the beach in Scheveningen, booking a hotel in Scheveningen 15 minutes away from the mall is best. Hotels like Boulevard Hotel Scheveningen and the Aquarius Hotel are located at the beach in the most beautiful part of Scheveningen and have excellent reviews from their guests.

If you also come for a weekend to The Hague, there is plenty of choice of hotels in The Hague in all price ranges. You can find an overview of all hotels in The Hague here.

Opening Hours Of The Mall Of The Netherlands

The opening hours of The Mall of The Netherlands can be found in the table below.

The Westfield Mall of The Netherlands in Leidschendam opens at 10:00 from Monday to Saturday and a little later on Monday (11:00) and Sunday (12:00). The Mall of The Netherlands closes at the same time every day of the week, at 20:00.

DayOpening Hours
Monday11:00 – 20:00 hrs.
Tuesday10:00 – 20:00 hrs.
Wednesday10:00 – 20:00 hrs.
Thursday10:00 – 20:00 hrs.
Friday10:00 – 20:00 hrs.
Saturday10:00 – 20:00 hrs.
Sunday12:00 – 20:00 hrs.

I advise you to arrive before the mall’s opening to secure a parking spot. Since it is free parking, that is, of course, the most convenient. However, on rainy weekend days, it is wise to arrive by car to get a parking spot before opening.

In the evening it is considerably quieter, and there is much more chance that you can find a parking space. Note that this does not apply on rainy days, especially on rainy weekends. Then you’re better off coming to The Mall of The Netherlands by public transport.
